Congratulations to population health analytics lab members Emmalin Buajitti and Tristan Watson for being awarded Vanier Scholarships in support of their graduate studies!

Emmalin BuajittiEmmalin Buajitti is a former Master’s of Public Health student and current Research Officer with the Population Health Analytics Lab. She is a first-year PhD student in the Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Occupational Health at McGill University, under the supervision of Dr. Jill Baumgartner. For her PhD, Emmalin will identify neighborhood features of the urban environment in Accra, Ghana that can be targeted to support healthy and equitable development. In partnership with city planners and other policymakers in Accra, Emmalin will use methods from epidemiology and geography to identify risk factors in the neighborhood environment that can be leveraged to improve population health and reduce health inequalities in low- and middle-income urban settings. Her research will respond to a growing need for evidence about neighborhoods and urban health, and support the co-creation of viable, innovative policy solutions to build healthier and more equitable cities around the world.

Tristan Watson is currently a Research Analyst with the Population Health Analytics Lab. He is a first-year PhD student in the Division of Epidemiology at the Dalla School of Public Health, under the supervision of Dr. Arjumand Siddiqi. Tristan’s research will use causal inference methods to study the effect of symptomatic osteoarthritis on depressive symptoms among adults in the Canadian population. His research will improve our understanding of the causal pathways between symptomatic osteoarthritis and depressive symptoms. The outcomes of his study will inform intervention strategies for reducing the risk of developing depressive symptoms in people living with symptomatic osteoarthritis.

We look forward to watching both Emma and Tristan make important contributions to population and public health throughout their PhD studies! Congratulations!
