Ioannis (Giannis) Afentakis is currently in his final year of doctoral studies within the AI for Health CDT program at Imperial College London, UK. The Global Fellows Fund, which fosters international placements with high impact, supports PhD students like Ioannis to collaborate with labs at Imperial’s key global partners. Among these partners is the University of Toronto, a hub of high-caliber research that Ioannis is eager to explore further.

His academic inquiry is centered on developing machine learning models for predicting blood glucose levels, which is pivotal in diabetes care. This involves analyzing data from continuous glucose monitors, alongside variables such as insulin dosage, dietary intake, and physical activity.

As a visiting scholar at the Population Health Analytics lab, Giannis seeks to deepen his understanding of population health and the development of risk models that inform public health strategies and policymaking. His interests also extend to the AI for Public Health (AI4PH) and the Temerty Centre for AI Research and Education in Medicine (T-CAIREM) at the University of Toronto.

With a Master of Science in Computer Science from the University of Warwick and another in Applied Mathematics and Physical Sciences from the National Technical University of Athens, Giannis is enthusiastic about the prospect of collaborating with the esteemed researchers at the Population Health Analytics Lab. He anticipates a fruitful exchange of ideas and research insights, capitalizing on the chance to engage with influential figures in the field at the University of Toronto.

We are excited to welcome Giannis to the team!
