Sabrina Chiodo is a PhD student in Epidemiology at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto. She is also a recent recipient of the CIHR-CGS Doctoral Research Award. Under the guidance of Dr. Laura Rosella, Sabrina applies big data and predictive modeling techniques to advance the prediction and prevention of adverse pregnancy outcomes in Canada. Her research integrates biological, social, and environmental determinants of health.
During her Master of Public Health in Epidemiology, Sabrina utilized predictive modelling to evaluate air pollution interventions across Canadian cities. Building on this foundation, her PhD thesis aims to develop the Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes Population Risk Tool (PregPoRT). This innovative tool is designed to enhance the prediction, prevention, and management of APOs such as gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and placental abruption. PregPoRT exemplifies the objectives of precision public health by incorporating a wide range of determinants, enabling targeted and equitable health interventions.
Regarding Sabrina’s reaction to receiving the CIHR-CGS Doctoral Research Award, she expressed deep honor and emphasized the significance of her research in maternal and fetal health. Sabrina further states, “This award reflects my personal commitment to this important research area, and also the extensive support from my supervisor, Dr. Rosella, and my peers at the Population Health Analytics lab.”
As for the impact of this achievement on her studies and career ambitions, Sabrina sees it as a significant boost. The award reinforces her determination to advance perinatal health research and equips her to contribute to public health innovations benefiting mothers and children across Canada. It reaffirms her career goal of developing impactful public health policies and interventions.
