The Solution Network in AI for Diabetes Prediction and Prevention, funded by the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR), aims to address the distrust in AI technologies in health systems and lack of local co-design and planning for responsible deployment. Using a participatory approach and co-design with diverse stakeholders in health, AI, ethics and the community, this Solution Network aims to develop a framework to guide AI governance in health systems and responsibly deploy diabetes machine learning models in Peel region.
On November 28, 2023, CIFAR hosted the inaugural Network Meeting that brought together the Solution Network Team, which is Co-Directed by Drs. Laura Rosella and Jay Shaw, and representatives from a range of local and provincial health institutions, academics, research staff and trainees. Together, participants shared perspectives and feedback on AI governance for health and discussed needs for diabetes prevention and management that AI models can respond to.
Participants discussed the need for multi-level governance for AI in health systems, human-centred approaches to build trust, and considerations of equity. Participants emphasized the importance of establishing strong partnerships and meaningful engagement strategies with the community. Through discussions, it was clear that there is much enthusiasm to work together.
The Solution Network Team have debriefed on the valuable perspectives and ideas shared at the meeting. The immediate next steps will focus on establishing a Partnership Table and Community Advisory Committee who will work together with the Solution Network.
